Boys and Their Toys

Scribbled by Perky |

Back in my hell-raising days almost 10 years ago, I had dated or "fling-ed" with a number of guys. True to my nature of living life in the 5th gear, the guys I had dated seemed to have shared something in common (apart from me, that is. Lol!): A hot ride.

I love cars just as much as I love to drive. The faster the car goes, the better (getting speeding tickets is almost expected of me). I don't know how to drive slow (read: going slower than 60km/h), especially when I'm on the highway and the road ahead is clear. Perhaps the only time when I do drive "slow" is when I'm lost, or when I'm looking for parking, or when my mom's in the car (coz she freaks out if I go above 50km/h)).

The terms "cruising" or "Sunday driving" does not exist in my dictionary (although to some people everyday IS a "Sunday drive" and they seem to take their "passion" for driving slow onto the fast lane on the highway. Idiots.).

Anyway, I thought I'd share with you the kind of cars that my boys had. Damn, blogging about this makes me miss them. The cars I mean. Not the boys.

BMW 7-series
Now this was one heck of a car. It belonged to the doctor I went out with once (who turned out to be Dr McStalker, btw). When you're in college and you went out with a doctor who picked you up in a BMW, you pretty much became the coolest girl in class. Think along the lines of dreaming of becoming a socialite and you can get the picture of what went through my head while I was sitting in his car. Unfortunately, I was more in love with the car than I was with the doctor.

Ferrari Modena
Photo credit: www.freewebs.comThe cream of the crop, that's what this car was is. It belonged to *Dave, who at 5ft 11" was too tall for my petite stature. He also had a mean streak of sense of humor. You see, because the seats in his car was very deep, you could barely see me when I'm sitting inside his car. So for my birthday he specifically got me a cushion for his car (the joke was that it was pointless for him to be showing off his car when no one can see his girlfriend inside the car). My lack of leg length and body height was also the reason why I never got to (and never will) drive a Ferrari.

Toyota Supra
Photo credit: www.fastcoolcars.comThis was the "it" car back in the late 90's/early 2000. And when *Crazy Mofo let me drive it, I was like a kid in a candy store. At first I was driving around 80km/h because I was afraid that I might get us into an accident. It wasn't my car. Also I didn't have the money to pay for the repairs should there be any mishaps when I'm behind the wheels . But he encouraged me to step on it and before I knew it, I was driving at 200km/h. That was the fastest I've ever driven a car. The experience evoked the feelings of thrill as well as "fuck, I almost pissed in my pants!" at the same time.

BMW X5

I actually have mixed feelings about the X5. I love the rugged look on this SUV, how smooth it felt when driving on the highway, and not to mention how safe I felt while driving despite the size and height of this car. You really don't feel like you're "flying" even though you're driving at speeds of over 140km/h. But what I didn't like was the iDrive system on the dashboard, which was so confusing for me. So when I wasn't too busy fidgeting with the knobs/buttons on the dashboard, I actually enjoyed driving the X5.

Daihatsu Rocky
Photo credit: http://www.autoevolution.comThis one is nowhere near as fast or as cool as the cars above. It literally was a crap car but I liked it. The exterior was tough, and it gave the aura that it was indestructible. However, it was very difficult to handle and I had to step on the clutch real hard in order to shift gears. But still, the car gave a sense of adventure, and that was always exciting to me.

Still Got the Blues For You?

Scribbled by Perky |

2009 is proving to be the year of weddings. I've got 6 weddings to attend from February to March. I'm more concerned about what I'll be wearing to each weddings coz I ain't gonna get caught wearing the same thing twice!

Anyways, here's a quiz for you guys.

If an ex-bf or an ex-fling or an ex-whatever-you-call-someone-who-used-to-be-important-to-you-but-not-so-much-anymore, invited you to attend their wedding, would you go?

I can pretty much guess the kind of responses I'll be getting.

So I'm going to narrow down the question a little bit further. Would you go if he was the guy-who-got-away? The one who once in a while still pops into your mind and makes you wonder,"Hmm... what if we had stayed together?"

I'm in a dilemma. Don't get me wrong. I'm more than happy that he's getting married. There was no bitterness when we ended. Though I'm not in love with him anymore, I still love him, get what I mean? But I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to go.

Just getting his invitation card gave me an emotional roller-coaster, so I can't imagine that it'll be any easier for me to watch him say his I-do's with another woman. And I'd really hate to be that girl who looks at the groom with those sad nostalgic eyes.

So should I or should I not go?

I Used To Be a Whole Lotta Fun

Scribbled by Perky |

I woke up today realizing that I'll be in my 30's sooner than I'd like to be. The thing that striked me most was that I've kinda stopped having fun. I mean, I'm not saying that I'm miserable or depressed or going through some premature mid-life crisis.

Oh I'm anything but that. It's just that I've stopped doing some of the things I truly enjoyed. It's tough being a working gal. By the time I come home from work, all I wanna do is chill out in front of the tv and sleep.

Once in a blue moon I'll pick up my trusty Fender (she's trusty because she's never failed me no matter how crappy I play). But other than that, you can most definitely find me on the couch watching tv.

My underused white Strat... but she still sings like a beauty :)

I used to

inline skate. This was almost a daily ritual for me and was a good way to keep in shape. Cuts and bruises were worn like a badge of honor. When I moved to Kuala Lumpur to work, I left my skates back home, leaving this hobby behind too.

Me skating at the skatepark (or what used to be)in Kuching... probably moments before my face landed on the tar ;)

I used to

go rock climbing. I have a fear of heights and this was one way of overcoming that fear. I used to rock climb once a week with my friend. But he left to study in Australia and I just couldn't be bothered to find a replacement.

Pic from Arrowhead Pine Cone Festival

I used to

party excessively a lot. The routine was simple - the nights of Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays were devoted to clubbing and downing Vodka-related drinks (which was either served on the rocks or screwdriver).

Oh I lived for Fridays because they were a little bit special. Fridays would be our pre-clubbing get together, and that involved me and the girls sipping Margaritas at TGIF first. Then we'd head to one of the girls' home to shower & get ready for a whole night of dancing (and more drinking, of course). Most of the times (if we weren't all too drunk by then) we'd be the last to leave the club.

But these days the only drinks I drink is either beer or wine, or in other words the drinks for old people. These days I prefer to be able to hear and remember my conversations with people. And besides, how do you feel when you see a 30-something year old lady drunk and dancing on table tops? You kinda feel sad for her, don't cha? ;)

When It Is OK to Hit Below the Belt

Scribbled by Perky |

I don't know what possessed me to write this. I was halfway writing about something else when I had the urge to write about a particular guy from my hell-raising days past.

I believe it was in 2001 when I had mistakenly took lust for love. I was with a girlfriend one day, doing regular girlfriend stuff in KLCC and decided to walk into the Kinokuniya bookstore.

Other than satisfying my weird obsession with being in bookstores/stationary shops, I wasn't looking for anything particular. But then, something... someone caught my eye.

Not to sound cliche, but really it was like how we watch in movies where the time kinda goes in slow-mo. There he was, standing in the music section, clad in khakis and polo t-shirt, the most good looking guy I have ever laid my eyes on. His looks was borderline on being pretty but somehow has managed to retain his machoism on that pretty face of his. His skin wasn't as porcelain white as most typical Japanese people are. He was kinda tanned, which scored huge in my books.

The above is NOT Japanese Boy, although they do have the same body type.

Without consciously knowing it, I was secretly hiding in between the bookshelves so I could have a better look at him. I grabbed my girlfriend's hand and excitedly squealed to her,"OMG, you have to check this guy out. He's so HOT!!!"

"Well, why don't you just say hi to him?", she replied to me and without warning, just grabbed my hand and dragged me to him.

Anyways, to cut the story short, turns out Japanese Boy is a friend of hers. So we were formally introduced, hung out more and eventually ended dating each other.

In many ways, Japanese Boy was a perfect bf - charming, unbelievably good looking, body nicely toned and tanned, filthy rich, well-mannered, and my friends loved him (and I believe there were days when they'd rather hang out with him than with me).

But he was always on the horny side, which didn't go down to well with me. No seriously, he was like a horny energizer bunny on speed. And I didn't want to go down that road with him because there was that gut feeling telling me something was not quite right with my prince charming.

The resemblance is very cunning...

So anyways, one fine day he tells me he needed to go back to Japan for a month to visit his grandma. In my heart I was like,"Aawwww, so sweet! He adores his grandma."

Ok fine, I was thinking more about the gifts he was going to buy for me from Japan.

While he was in Japan, his cousin (whom I've grown quite close to) and I was doing our usual drinking session when the conversation went something like this:

Cousin: I can't believe you let him go back to Japan.
Perky: I don't see why not.
Cousin: You're the coolest girlfriend.
Perky: What do you mean?
Cousin: He's there to be with his ex-girlfriend.

Cousin then proceeds to take a picture from his wallet of this girl who looked like a porn star.

.........

Let's just say my reaction to that was very unladylike. But I played my cool and got my girlfriends to play along with my little revenge. When Japanese Boy came back, he didn't know that I had already found out about his affair. Because he had all this money to spend (and he wasn't stingy with it), my girls and I took him for a shopping spree.

It was fun at first, trying to burn a hole in his wallet. But unless if I was buying an island, it was very unlikely that he was going to be anywhere near broke. So I confronted him. Basically, he said he loved me very much but he's a man with certain needs and when those needs aren't met, he went looking for it with someone who would give it to him (which was always the said ex gf).

Yeap.

So anyways, long story cut short. I broke up with him. He went back to Porn Star Gf, gotten her pregnant, married her and only to divorce her a couple years later.

He did try to get back together even while he was married to her, but let's just say, it's kinda hard for me to take a guy seriously when the continuation of his generation depends on the lipstick between his legs.

Would you play with a lipstick?

Going BINGO!

Scribbled by Perky |

I used to think that the game of Bingo was a game for senior citizens as that was what I had often watched on tv – if there’s a scene on the old folks at a retirement home, more often than not they’ll be playing Bingo.

But that perception of mine changed when I went to elementary school in UK. Everyday we had an hour which was devoted to either story-reading or playing boardgames. Apart from my music lessons, PE and swimming classes, I practically lived for this hour because we were each given our little box of milk and a snack, and basically just spend the hour having fun.

On some days it could be story-telling (where sometimes the principal himself would come in and read us a story) and other days it would be us forming groups playing Scrabble, Pictionary, Snakes & Ladders and so forth.

But on one particular day, my classroom teacher Ms Eckles said she had a game where all of us can take part, there was no need to form groups. In her hand was this curious-looking device that looked like a transparent ball and in it were many tiny balls. She handed a card of numbers to each of us, told us to take a highlighter each and sit down.

So there we were, learning to play Bingo. At first I was pretty slow in locating the numbers that were called out but as soon as I got the hang of it, I had my game face on. It was so nerve wrecking waiting for that one number I needed to call out ‘Bingo!’. And even more nerve wrecking when I saw my friends anxious to call out for ‘Bingo!’ too. We were playing for chocolate brownies that day, so you can imagine how competitive we all were. When our play time was over, a riot almost broke out because we wanted to continue on playing. "Please Ms Eckles, just one more!!", we screamed. It was that addictive.

Last year I attended a party and they had a game of Bingo. We were playing for electrical goods and just being in that moment made me realize that you’re never too young or too old to be playing Bingo.

Now we can start them off on Bingo as young as 2 years old. Screenlife Games came out with Disney Bingo DVD game that offers a high-tech twist by combining classic Bingo game play with Disney characters and movie clips. Available at Amazon.com or Drugstore.com, this Disney Bingo DVD game lets kids learn numbers and colors recognition as well as matching skills.

Reliving the Moment

Scribbled by Perky |

I'm pretty sure that a lot of you have that one special moment in life that you would love to relive or revisit once again if only you had a time machine or Aladdin's genie. I thought about it for quite a while and I just couldn't pinpoint an exact moment in my life that I'd love to relive.

I have many moments that I'd love to revisit.

Yeah, for sure, I'd love to relive my "We Will Rock You" experience once again (or many many times again). I also would love to relive that special moment when McChef and I first got together (as it's always important to treasure such memories).

I wouldn't mind going back to the time when I was just a regular college student, spending the evenings with my girlfriends at TGIF while we drank our margaritas as our celebration of being actively-dating young ladies. Because those were some really good times.

Anyways, there were just too many memories to choose from. So I posted a Spark, asking people to write about that one moment in time that they'd love to relive again. And here are some good reads:

Reliving the 80’s on the Big Screen

Scribbled by Perky |

I think the 80’s has offered some of the best movies ever. I’m not saying that because I’m a child of the 80’s, but because really, the 80’s was the best era. Remember Conan the Barbarian? That was like the best swords-and-sorcery movie back then. Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan, I couldn’t really understand what he was saying. However, in these CGI-heavy times when fights are so overly choreographed, it was definitely a pleasure to see Conan’s muscles basic but believable combat.

But what I love most about the movies back in the 80’s was the sci-fi movies. Remember E.T.: The Extra-Terrestial starring one very adorable Drew Barrymore (not as E.T. though. She was the cute curly blonde Gertie)?

Then there’s also Back to the Future, which I have the complete set on DVD. Back to the Future 1 was the best for me. I think I developed a huge crush on Michael J Fox after watching him play the guitar during the prom night scene. And who can forget the DeLorean? I had a friend who used to drive the DeLorean and we used to tease him,”Drive any faster and you might just drive us into the future!” Yeah, it’s corny, I know. But isn’t corny an essential part of the 80’s?

Anyways, anyone of you remember the box office hit WarGames starring one very young Matthew Broderick? It’s about a hacker who unwittingly gets the chance to play a game with the US Military’s war computer. That was 25 years ago. So, in conjuction with its 25th Anniversary, Fathom will be screening WarGames in selected theaters on Thursday, July 24th. This one night only event will also include never-before-seen interviews and a sneak peek at the making of the sequel – WarGames: The Dead Code.

When I Was Just A Little Girl

Scribbled by Perky |

I don't really remember much from my early childhood days. Well, I remember bits and pieces of it, and usually it'll be my mom or my dad or whoever who'd give me the full version of my memory.

Anyways, this particular memory I remember pretty darn well on my own.

This was at the time when I was growing up in Manchester. I woke up one morning, I remember it was already very bright and my body was extremely warm. I sat up on the mattress and thought there was something really wrong with my body. Like, really really wrong.

"Why is my mouth constantly watery???"

I tried spitting the excess water out of my mouth. I even tried wiping my tongue dry but to no avail. So I started to get really, really worried. And then panic kicked in.

In the midst of my panic attack, I felt something trickle down my nose. I placed my fingers on my nose and saw that the fluid that was coming out of my nose was red in color.

"Blood. I'm bleeding. Why am I bleeding?? And what is this liquid in my mouth????"

I ran out of the room, screaming for my mom,"Mummy!! Mummy!! Something's wrong with me! I'm dying!!! I don't want to die yet!! I haven't prayed to God today!!"

Well, as you can see, I was already quite the drama queen back then and quite the saint. Anyways, turns out the "liquid in my mouth" was saliva (which is pretty normal to have as I later found out) and I had a nose bleed on that day. So yeah, my first few memories of childhood was pretty traumatic, I must say.

Anyways, here are some of the good people at SocialSpark who have taken up my opp. Do spare the time to read about their childhood stories:

I was at this club one night and I had to use the bathroom, which turned out to be a unisex bathroom. So anyways, I was at the basin washing my hands, when I noticed this guy standing next to me and just kept looking at me through the mirror.

So I gave him the “what’s up?” nod because I was getting a little bit uncomfortable with him just staring at me.

Then he said,”Do you want to know what it is that I see in this mirror right now? Us in the near future, dating *wink wink*”.

That was probably one of the worst pick-up lines I’ve ever heard, but it did give me a good laugh and we did ended up dating for quite a while.

I don’t know what possessed him to say such things, but if I had to guess, it would probably be because of my hair. I was sporting a Rachel hair-do (Jennifer Aniston’s character in Friends) back then and it swished and swooshed so perfectly with each step I took.

So, if you’re looking for hair products that will give you that Victory Hair, Extreme Style has just the answer for you. As a matter of fact, Extreme Style by VO5 is having the VO5 Ultimate Flirting Championship, where you can practise your pick-up lines and flirting skills online.

The One That Got Away

Scribbled by Perky |

As we go through life, we'll meet lots of people and make mental notes of them. We'll always remember the ones with whom we shared special memories with (like the time when one of the gfs got stung by a jellyfish and how we all volunteered to piss on her to ease her pain - all in the name of friendship), or the one you first kissed, or the one you first loved, or the one you who always made you feel better.

But most of all, somehow or rather, we'll always remember the one that got away. Maybe we don't think about that person every single waking moment of every single day, but the thought of that person does pop up once in a while.

I think that the one that got away is someone who was very special to you, someone very close to your heart and everything was fantastic. Except the timing was just off. It was like as if you found this diamond in the rough, so to speak, but the stars or the planet wasn't lined up quite right in your universe.

I have that guy, the one that got away. He was the first guy I actually felt something real for. I met my one-that-got-away when I was in college. We didn't exactly start off great, but the dynamics of our friendship shifted at a pace I was comfortable with. Not too fast, not too slow. As time went by, I found myself making more mental notes of this guy - his sense of humor, the way he talked, the way he moved, how out of tune his singing was (which made me laugh even harder), how he doesn't take himself seriously, how he treated others, and how he was when he was with me.

Despite all those greatness, things didn't work out between us (well, obviously, since he is the one that got away). I suppose it was the timing of it all. Perhaps I was too slow in figuring out how my feelings were towards him. I had a lot of things going on at that point in time - I was away from home the first time, I broke up (again) with my high school bf, I was trying to adjust to the college life, etc.

A part of me wanted to just be swept away by his sweet gesture but a part of me was trying to keep things simple between us, well, simple for me at least. Yes, I wasn't ready for another relationship and it showed through the mix signals I was sending him.

Then one fine day he told me he's got someone new. I was overwhelmed with this sudden pain in my chest and how I tried really, really, really hard not to cry. And that was when I knew, how hard I had fallen for this guy and how things were never going to be the same between us.

It was quite strange because we never argued, never had misunderstandings, the chemistry between us was more than effing great but we both pulled away from each other because it was too much to deal with. He had a gf to attend to, while I had a broken heart to mend.

As time went by, after countless pity-me parties with the girls, after countless bad decisions in the guys I would date after my one-that-got-away, my heart finally healed itself. And one day I found myself ready.

Ready to settle down, ready to stick with my man through thick and thin. My current relationship, I believe, will be the one who I'll spend the rest of my life with. It'll work this time because I've finally made sense of things and I'm a different person now. I finally understand who I am, what I want and what I need from a partner.

But sometimes I do think about the one that got away. I wonder,"What if we were together now, with me as I am and not as I was?" Would it have worked? Would I be happier than I am now?

The one that got away is the biggest "what if?" question you'll have in your life. But considering the situation that I'm in (one foot down the wedding aisle with McChef), I'll just have to accept that my one-that-got-away is married to someone else and that he really is, well, the one that got away.
But thankfully, being the person that I am today, I've also realized that me wondering about the "what if's" is just a test of my commitment to McChef and I'll just shrug it off. But it's always nice to know that the memories I had with my one-that-got-away will most likely bring a smile to my face when I'm no longer "hip and happening".

Anyways, the real point that I'm trying to put across here is, if you have that person and it's not too late to act on it (such as you're both single), then seriously, do something about it. Ask him/her on a date, because who knows, you could very well be the person who got away for him/her. And who knows, now that the stars and the planets have lined themselves perfectly in both your universe, wouldn't it be great to be able to say to him/her, "Hey you, you're the one that almost got away".
